Happiness = Gratitude

“Grant us, we pray thee, a heart wide open to all this joy and beauty, and save our souls from being so steeped in care, or so darkened by passion, that we pass heedless and unseeing when even the thornbush by the wayside is aflame with the glory of God”

Walter Rauschenbusch

This is one of my favorite quotes.

When we were children, we would sing in our school assembly a song that was called ‘Count Your Many Blessings’. It begins like this:

When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God has done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
*Count your many blessings, see what God has done.
[*And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.]”

In childhood I found it just another song we had to sing as we sweated it out under the assembly sun. In adult life, I have found great solace in it. Even in the darkest of places, there is something to be grateful for. From loved ones to blue skies, from flowers to good health, from clean drinking water to a peaceful nights sleep, there is always something.

I have the privilege of coaching people and it is starkly apparent how gratitude plays a role in their happiness. The more grateful, the happier, irrespective of the scale of their problems. Those who are grateful, they thrive not just survive.

It is known that what you focus on expands, so the next time you are feeling particularly out of luck, start to count your blessings and see what God has done. #GiftTheLight
